Applications for 2026 are now open until February 27th, 2026. The scholarship awards will be announced by March 20, 2026. In recognition of the exceptional contributions of individuals listed below to the NC SPICE, the following scholarships will be awarded annually.
SPICE scholarships are intended to promote further education in infection prevention and will cover the registration cost for the SPICE Courses. Infection preventionist in North Carolina will be given priority (required for the Infection Control Certification scholarship(s)).
Before starting an application, you will need the required documents: a resume and a supervisor’s letter of support.
William A. Rutala Advancement in Infection Prevention Scholarship – Certification in Infection Control (CIC)
Awarded annually, this scholarship will provide support to an individual working in an acute care facility who will certify or re-certify in infection control in the coming year. The purpose of the scholarship is to reduce the cost of attending one of the four-day courses: Infection Control Part 1 or Infection Control Part 2. The recipient will also be provided with the APIC “Certification Companion-Mastering the Certification in Infection Control (CIC) Exam”.
Candidates must be a professional residing in North Carolina who: 1) is a current APIC-NC member, 2) is actively involved in infection prevention and control, and 3) is eligible to take the CBIC exam for initial certification or recertification.
David Weber – Certification in Infection Control (CIC)
Awarded annually, this scholarship will provide support to an individual who will certify or re-certify in infection control in the coming year. The purpose of the scholarship is to reduce the cost of attending one of the four-day courses: Infection Control Part 1 or Infection Control Part 2. The recipient will also be provided with the APIC “Certification Companion-Mastering the Certification in Infection Control (CIC) Exam”.
Candidates must be a physician residing in North Carolina who: 1) is currently an infectious disease fellow or a member of SHEA, 2) is actively involved in infection prevention and control with a minimum of 2 years’ experience OR an infectious disease fellow training in infection prevention or antibiotic stewardship.
Evelyn Cook Scholarship Long-Term Care Certification in Infection Control (LTC-CIP)
Awarded annually, this scholarship will support an individual working in a nursing home who will certify or re-certify in infection control in the coming year. The purpose of the scholarship is to reduce the cost of attending the course Infection Control in Long-Term Care Facilities. The recipient will also be provided with the APIC “Certification Companion-Mastering the Certification in Infection Control (CIC) Exam”.
Candidates must be a professional residing in North Carolina who: 1) is actively involved in infection prevention and control and 2) is eligible to take the CBIC exam for initial certification or recertification.
Karen Hoffmann Scholarship-Infection Control in Long-term Care Facilities
The purpose of the scholarship is to reduce the cost of attending the course Infection Control in Long-Term Care Facilities. The recipient will be expected to attend the IC in LTCFs course in the year the scholarship is awarded.
Amy Powell Scholarship-Infection Control Part 1 OR Infection Control Part 2
The purpose of the scholarship is to reduce the cost of attending one of the 4-day courses: Infection Control Part 1 or Infection Control Part 2. The recipient will be expected to attend the Part 1 or Part 2 course in the year the scholarship is awarded.
Eva Clontz Scholarship-Infection Control Part 1 OR Infection Control Part 2
The purpose of the scholarship is to reduce the cost of attending one of the 4-day courses: Infection Control Part 1 or Infection Control Part 2. The recipient will be expected to attend the Part 1 or Part 2 course in the year the scholarship is awarded.
